Shield ("iben"), Upper Sepik, Papua New Guinea. Wooden board - Lot 164
Shield ("iben"), Upper Sepik, Papua New Guinea. Wooden board (carved from the buttress roots of large trees, called "kofekan") decorated in champlevé with axially symmetrical motifs. Two opposing triangles, outlined in yellow pigment, and six dark dots on a white background (natural lime pigment) mark the axis. On either side of this axis, leaning against each other, two fetus-shaped figures occupy the space of the shield on a white background. Each is composed of a series of four yellow ovals and one large yellow oval. These figures are painted in red tending to brown. They appear to be cross-sectional figurations. The slightly faded pigmentation and traces of xylophagous insects attest to the shield's age. According to specialized literature, the figurations have no particular significance. This The figurative style and shape of the shield are characteristic of the Upper Sepik cultural area, particularly the Abau-speaking Green River population.
