In-12, [2], 62 pp. Paperback, printed cover. A very good copy (small paper loss at bottom of spine and one corner). Rare and amusing satirical pamphlet hostile to the regime of Napoleon III. Hubert Joseph Edouard Ordinaire, of old Franc-Comtois stock, a freethinker and Fourierist, led a Phalansterian circle under the July Monarchy; under the Empire, he shared the opinions of the Republican Left. He was a political friend of Victor Considérant, Gambetta, Adolphe Crémieux and Courbet. For this pamphlet, he was prosecuted, sentenced to prison and fined heavily (cf. Vincent Wright, Éric Anceau. Les préfets de Gambetta, 2007, p. 337-339). This pamphleteer's text takes the form of a "humorous tale" that begins "in 18..." at "the time of the renewal of the general councils". That year, 1867, É. Ordinaire himself was elected General Councillor (Ornans). This satirical text is "the brainchild of an unknown author. The electoral scenes it depicts have so far had no counterpart in France. But even if the publication of this pamphlet had no other result than to warn us against similar failings, the translator would still believe he had done a useful job...". (p. 5). The Grand Duchy of Gerolstein "is the happiest country in the world. Its constitution, freely accepted by universal suffrage, guarantees the people all the freedoms compatible with public order and protects them from revolutionary upheavals. The reigning Grand Duke is Yéri-Dumm XXV, and his male descendants will succeed him until the end of the world."
