CHARAS (Moyse). Pharmacopée royale galénique et chymique [.. - Lot 24
CHARAS (Moyse). Pharmacopée royale galénique et chymique [...] avec les formules latines & françoises ; le tarif des médicamens, & un Traité extrêmement curieux sur les eaux minérales. Lyon, Frères Bruyset, 1753. 2 volumes in 1 vol. in-4° of xvj, 440, viij, 441- 876, 72 pp. Front. and 6 folding plates at end. Marbled fawn calf, 5 ribbed spine with fleurons, red morocco t.p., double gilt fillet on the edges, red edges (period binding). CHARAS (1619-1698), an apothecary, was the first to publish numerous formulas that had been kept secret for centuries, some of them alchemical in nature. Of particular note is the formula for theriac, made popular by the Greeks as an antidote to animal bites and spread along the Silk Road; kept secret for centuries, it comprised over 60 separate ingredients. In addition, this work contains one of the first complete classifications of chemical elements and compounds, considered a precursor of the periodic table; see the last plate: "Explication des plus communs caractères chymiques" ("Explanation of the most common chymic characters"). Mottling, one spine split, wear to corners.
