Albert MARQUET (1875-1947) - Lot 201
Albert MARQUET (1875-1947)
Carriage on the bridge at Champigny-sur-Marne
Oil on canvas.
Signed lower left. Titled on the stretcher "Pont de Champigny 8522" in blue pencil.
33 x 41 cm
Presumed exhibition: Galerie Druet (Old Galerie Druet label on back of stretcher).
Expert : Cabinet Chanoit
From his Paris home, Marquet enjoyed summertime wanderings around Paris, in the valleys of the Seine (Samois, Herblay) or along the Marne (la Varenne Saint-Hilaire, Chennevières, Champigny-sur-Marne). He abandoned the high colors of Fauvism around 1910, but retained the formal conciseness that was to be the hallmark of his work.
Our picture, painted during the second decade of the century, illustrates Marquet's modernity: geometrical foliage, simplified lines, silhouettes evoked with a supple brushwork reminiscent of his Japanese Indian ink drawings. Our painting is particularly striking for the boldness of its composition: the reflection on the peaceful water inverts the arches and deck of the Champigny bridge into a symmetrical figure.
