ANDRYANE, Alexandre. Memoirs of a state prisoner in Spielberg. Paris, Ladvocat, 1838. 4 vol. in-8° of 384 pp; 381 pp; III, 1 bl. 404 pp; 362, XXI pp. half black basane, long romantic spine, gilt title (Binding of the period). Volumes III and IV in first edition. A. Andryane was a fellow prisoner of Silvio Pellico and Confalonieri; born in 1797, initiated as a carbonaro and freemason by Buonarroti, he was sent to Lombardy to reconstitute the Adelfia Lodge. Arrested in Milan by the Austrians in 1823, he was sentenced to life imprisonment in Spielberg, Moravia. He was pardoned in 1832. Stendhal praised the "curious memoirs of M. Andryane, amusing as a tale and which will remain like Tacitus" and alluded to the misadventures of the carbonaro in chapter V of his Charterhouse of Parma. Well completed with the analytical table in fine. Some foxing. A good copy.
