The Natural Theology of Raymond de Sebon is a partial source of the "Essays" of Montaigne (who wrote essay 12 of book II giving it the title "Apology of Raimond Sebond"). The work of Sebond had a great success in the XVIth century. "It exposes, indeed, a method of thought and deduction purely rational and empirical, that is to say the one in the name of which the humanists undertook their "cultural revolution". By this method, Sebon attempts to demonstrate the truths of faith without recourse to Revelation. In fact the observations contained in the Natural Theology do not differ essentially from theses supported by "atheistic" treatises". (cf. entry "Sebon Raimond", Encyclopedia universalis). Born in Barcelona, disciple of Raimond Lull and opponent of the scholastic doctrine, Raymondf Sebond was professor of medicine and theology in Toulouse.
