PÉLISSON-FONTANIER, Paul. The Feste of Erbaud. Of October 8, - Lot 280
PÉLISSON-FONTANIER, Paul. The Feste of Erbaud. Of October 8, 1668. [Blois: Jules Hotot, 1668]. Brochure in-12 of 40 p. Unbound, preserved in a cardboard case with the arms of William Strirling Maxwell (1818-1878, great Scottish bibliophile) Very rare first edition of the relation of the feast given to Louis XIV at the castle of Herbault near Chambord (currently in the commune of Neuvy, in the Loir-et-Cher) on October 8, 1668. The banquet, the rides, the shows and the illuminations of the day are described. It is one of the great court celebrations of the 17th century, for which a great feast, a ball, a comedy and a fireworks display were prepared. This publication does not seem to have been commercialized but, it seems, distributed to the personalities who had the privilege to participate in the event. Since 1591, the castle of Herbault belonged to the Phelypeaux family who kept it until 1814. This report is one of the first texts published by Paul Pellisson-Fontanier (1624-1693), a former secretary of Fouquet, who was imprisoned with his master in 1661, but released in 1666 (this account sounds like an attempt to return to grace with Louis XIV). Cioranescu, XVII, 54 034. Cf. A. Basseville, "La Feste d'Erbaud", in: Bulletin de la Société archéologique et historique de l'Orléanais (Orléans, Herluison, 1911).
