LOMÉNIE DE BRIENNE, Louis-Henri. Itinerarium, Paris : Claude - Lot 268
LOMÉNIE DE BRIENNE, Louis-Henri. Itinerarium, Paris : Claude Cramoisy and J. du Bray, 1662. In-8 of [24], 96 [2] p., frontispiece, hors-texte portrait, hors-texte plate (in two states), large folding map. Brown calf, spine ribbed and decorated, arms in the center of the boards (period binding). An attractive copy (slight foxing, damage to the text of the privilege on the last page). One of the first travel reports in Scandinavia and Lapland. Description of a journey undertaken from 1652 by Louis-Henri Loménie de Brienne from France to various countries of Northern Europe. "The account of this prodigious journey earned the future Secretary of State, upon his return, an early literary and worldly fame" (cf. Dieudonné, La Paix Clémentine, p. 82). Second edition, revised by Charles P atin, it is "much preferable to the first one of Paris, 1660, in-12" (Brunet). At the end of the book, an index of 22 pages, organized alphabetically, lists the various places visited during this journey. The book is illustrated with a frontispiece; a portrait of the author (drawn by C. Le Brun, and engraved by Rousselet); a plate out of text (here in 2 states) engraved by Silvestre (lapps, sledges and reindeers); and a folding map drawn by Nicolas Sanson retracing the author's journey. Bound in contemporary style with the arms of the Lamoignon family, which appear in the center of both boards. Signed autograph letter from Loménie de Brienne to Father Philippe Labbe (1607-1667). Brunet, I, 1258; Cioranescu, T. 1, p. 481.
