[CURIOSA, 1841]. LUCAS, Aimée. Of the dangers of prostitutio - Lot 247
[CURIOSA, 1841]. LUCAS, Aimée. Of the dangers of prostitution, Paris: at the Author's and at all the principal booksellers, 1841. In-12 (10.5 x 17 cm.) of 182 p., frontispiece. Red cardboard, gilt title on spine. Wear and soiling to the board with small lack at the foot of the spine, some quires slightly dislocated, paper slightly yellowed, scattered foxing; good copy nevertheless. Rare first edition. Frontispiece on China paper. In a first part, the author makes a picture of the functioning of prostitution, associating the prostitute, the pimp, and other "interested satellites": informer, landlord, janitor, etc. He inserts a lexicon, useful for the understanding of his story: "Vocabulary essential for understanding the language of pimps and public girls". In a second part, he proposes a plan to control prostitution and liquidate its "satellites". The author presents himself as a worker (poor proletarian, p. 155), who lived in this prostitutional world, but who was able to escape from it. "In this curious little book we find the story of the young watchmaker Polydore, who became a pimp through French chivalry. This story is illuminated by a "Vocabulary to understand the language of pimps and public girls" which goes from p. 31 to p. 38" (cf. Yve-Plessis, Bibliographie raisonnée de l'argot et de la langue verte, 1901). Provenance: Ex libris M.H. Hocquette. Copy enriched with a handwritten letter from the author.
