WIENER, Charles. [Collection of 3 publications and 5 autogra - Lot 223
WIENER, Charles. [Collection of 3 publications and 5 autograph Letters signed, 1884-1889]. 1 volume in-4, full of 5 autograph letters (signed) from Wiener. Blue half cloth, long spine, title page. A good copy (wear to corners, edges and headpieces, trace to a leaf showing the absence of a brochure). Interesting collection of documents concerning the famous archaeologist, traveler and diplomat. 5 autograph letters signed open the volume. Three publications follow. The autographs testify to the deep friendship between C. Wiener and Charles Freund-Deschamps. 1) The first letter (March 20, 1889) relates the death of C. W.'s mother. 2) The second (April 16, 1888) reveals C. W.'s adherence - if not to Boulangerism - then at least to the political figure that was General Boulanger. Indeed, W. congratulates his friend who has become a father and "wishes this tiny gentleman all the happiness that a voter in France can enjoy. May he vote for a handsome general - may he win himself a handsome plume - may he be the idol of the crowd, the adored of women, the darling of his fellow men. 3) This Boulangiste sensitivity is confirmed by the third letter (April 29, 1888): "Is little Roger growing? Is he a boulangiste? Does he like to suckle on the right side or the left side - observe that. Nothing could better predict the future political views of this young citizen." 4) In the fourth letter C. Wiener mentions his difficulties in being confirmed in the position he holds at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. 5) Finally, the fifth and last letter (March 20, 1884) is dated from Santiago de Chile where Wiener is secretary of the French legation. He is distressed by the attitude of the ambassador and speculates on the future of his tasks at the embassy (Wiener traveled through this country in all directions and describes it, in his own way, in a book published in 1888, "Chile and Chileans"). Charles Wiener (1851-1913) was interested in pre-Columbian civilizations at a very early age. It is at the age of 24 years that he undertakes his first trip in the Andes. Between 1875 and 1877, he missed the site of Machu Pichu. He will take the defense of the Indians against the Spanish colonization. His master work "Peru and Bolivia" served Hergé to document himself to draw "The 7 crystal balls" and "The temple of the Sun". Provenance : From the library of the recipient of these letters, and friend of C. Wiener, Charles Freund-Deschamps (engraved ex-libris). He was a great bibliophile whose rich library was dispersed in 1923.
