COUTURIER, Léon. 3 autograph letters signed, Saint-Guénole, - Lot 212
COUTURIER, Léon. 3 autograph letters signed, Saint-Guénole, Paris, from September 18 to November 10, 1905. Addressed to Léon Guizard (castle of Fabrègues, Hérault). 10 p. in 17,5 x 11 cm format. Very good general condition (folds and small brown spots). Beautiful technical correspondence from the painter, draftsman, illustrator, engraver, Léon Couturier (1842-1935) on the project of illustrating an invitation card, an ex-libris and a menu: "Please tell me in a very exact and detailed way what you think of it; it is easy to get along according to my indications and as you think of it. In my drawings many and many interesting and picturesque details will make these little scenes come alive in a different way...". He gives his rates for making menus, offers examples of engravings (which are attached to our lot). "If it would suit you better, I could also make the invitation card with pen and pencil, but for the bookplate it is absolutely necessary to execute it in cameo...". He then gives his days of freedom so that the recipient can write to him. He discusses the "vulgar" term of cook to indicate or not on the card and then draws the general aspect of the menu. An envelope to Léon Guizard, two press clippings, two engravings, a program annotated by Léon Couturier are enclosed. A student of Cabanel, appointed painter of the navy in 1890, Léon Couturier drew portraits of soldiers and fishermen, and illustrated numerous works.
