[EPHEMERA]. SAINT-CLAUDE (JURA) : ROUX. Fragment. [The fire] - Lot 47
[EPHEMERA]. SAINT-CLAUDE (JURA) : ROUX. Fragment. [The fire] Of Condat (or Saint-Claude). S. l., S. n., S. d. [1799 ?]. In-8 (12 x 20,5 cm) of 4 p. As issued, excellent condition. Rare and moving poetic testimony of this tragic episode, of June 19, 1799, which ravaged Saint-Claude. According to A. Rousset: "This last one was horrible. The imprudence of an innkeeper was the cause. It began at three quarters past noon, and at two o'clock the city was already in ruins. Three hundred triple-storey houses, of which it was composed, disappeared with all that they contained. Only one thatched cottage escaped the disaster. The loss was estimated at ten million. 65 people perished in the flames or under the rubble." (in Dictionnaire historique et statistique des communes de la Franche-Comté, tome II 1854). The fire, which decimated the city in a few hours, remains the largest ever known in Saint-Claude.
