SAND, George (1804-1876). Autograph letter signed "G Sand", - Lot 221
SAND, George (1804-1876). Autograph letter signed "G Sand", Nohant, February 19, 1867, to her "dear Martine". 1 p. in-8°. With autograph stamped envelope " Madame Martine / rue des feuillantines 95 / Paris ", postal mark of La Chatre, February 21, 1867. Framed under glass. Letter largely unpublished. Beautiful testimony of the benevolence and the kindness of the good lady of Nohant. Madame Martine, a widow born Guénot, was George Sand's servant in Paris and Palaiseau, from March 10, 1866 until the death of the novelist, who is trying here to obtain for her a position as a regular usherette, when she was only a supernumerary at the Vaudeville theater. George Sand does not count on Mr. Hostein, "and if Mr. Dumaine, who is good and obliging, does not obtain, I will obtain even less. She advised her to be patient, "don't leave the Vaudeville without being sure of being an usherette elsewhere". She hoped that Harmant [director of the Vaudeville] would favor her one day, "to arrive at this position is a very beautiful existence. You have to be patient to get there." She adds in postscript "Between us be said, if you had 500 fr to give to Mr. Hostein, I think you would enter, but he does nothing for nothing. At the Vaudeville, such things are not done. Louis-François Dumaine and Hippolyte Hostein were theater directors; the latter, scratched by George Sand, was then directing the theater of Chatelet. A partly unpublished letter, of which only two lines of the postscript are quoted. Georges Lubin, Correspondance de George Sand, tome XX, n° 13048. The correspondence of George Sand to the Widow Martine is preserved in the Calvet Museum in Avignon. It was included in the G. Privat catalog, autumn 1962. Good condition, the old descriptive card, attached under glass to the documents, is erroneous. Expert : Pierre Heyriès
