TSE-WEI, Tong; TAN-TSAI, Lieou (ill.). Chu Yuan, Peking: For - Lot 373
TSE-WEI, Tong; TAN-TSAI, Lieou (ill.). Chu Yuan, Peking: Foreign Language Publishing, 1957. Small Italian format (13 x 17.5 cm) of 103 pp. Cover illustrated in colour, drawings in black and white. Nice copy. Chinese comic strip in French, in black and white, 103 drawings with simple and brief explanation. The story is set in the period of the Warring Kingdoms (403-221 B.C.). It is part of a collection of works "not too difficult to understand for those who cannot read very fluently", aimed at the "broad popular masses". These books, published in the 1950s in "New China," served the cause of the Communist regime, and were a departure from "many of those illustrated books [which] exerted a very bad influence on the mass of readers by their chimerical, unhealthy, licentious content, inspired by a host of superstitions." For "In the new China, both grown-ups and children demand good books. Writers and artists are doing their best to provide them with good works, and publishers are doing their best to give them an attractive presentation. We now have a great many new illustrated books, some of them on the most popular ancient legends, some on historical events, some on the present life and aspirations of the Chinese people."
