DICKENS, Charles. A Christmas carol in prose being a ghost s - Lot 309
DICKENS, Charles. A Christmas carol in prose being a ghost story of Christmas. By Charles Dickens. With a coloured etching. Copyright edition, Leipzig : Bernhard Tauchnitz, 1843. In-12 of [4], 78 p., frontispiece. Publisher's full cloth with gilt decoration on center front board (with gilt title), cold decoration on second board, long spine decorated with double gilt fillets. Spine worn and missing at head and tail, rubbing on boards (sparing the gilt decoration), false title missing, paper slightly browned, spotting, small ink stains in the text (not hindering reading), good copy however. First edition published by Tauchnitz, second printing. Complete with the frontispiece after John Leech. From the "Collection of British Authors". On the lower front cover a young reader has pasted two small coloured paper drawings of a butterfly and a bird. In the book the same reader, presumably, has inserted a touching paper cut-out: a green arrow through two hearts (one red, the other blue, the first bearing the initials "G. S."). Provenance: Handwritten inscription on title page: "G. Schneekloth". Todd Bowden, p. 775 A1b.
