[CURIOSA]. In-18 of 108 p., 1 hors-texte plate. Full stiff vellum, long spine, red morocco title-pieces, mention of year in gilt on green morocco piece (period binding). A very good copy (vellum slightly tarnished). Complete with the engraving, p. 5, captioned. The Publisher's Notice states that "This edition was made on the one of 1748, in-12, entitled: Aihcrappih, without name of city and bookseller." Notice which also states that there is "another and more modern edition entitled: Hipparchia and Crates, a renewed tale of the Greeks, by an inhabitant of Potzdam, 1788, in-12." (defective edition according to the Notice). The same Notice continues: "We shall reply to those who would blame us for having edited this story, that a historical fact, quoted by Bayle, and by the dictionary of great men, in the article of Hypparchie and Cratès, must not be confused with voluptuous fictions and corrupting books. We will finally reply to them that: 'the evil is in the thing and not in the words'." Gay, I, 144.
