Marcel ORDINARY (1848-1896) The Source of the Lison near Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne, 1880 Oil on canvas, signed and dated lower left 90 x 117 cm Important restorations, accidents to the frame Presumed exhibition : Exhibition of paintings by Marcel Ordinaire, Salon adjoining the museums of the Place Labourée in Besançon, May 1897 (n° 27 "La Source du Lison, 1880") Expert : Cabinet Chanoit Marcel ORDINAIRE (1848-1896) is a Franc-Comtois painter very little present in the French public collections (A corner of the Loue in the Musée d'Orsay, the Source of the Lison in the Courbet Institute in Ornans, the Ruisseau du Puits Noir in the Musée de Montbéliard) And the artist's works rarely come up for auction. With this large painting, The Source of the Lison, dated 1880, from a different point of view from that of the Institut Courbet, Ordinaire deals with a key site in the region, which Courbet had depicted on several occasions. Born in Maisières (1848-1896), near Ornans, Marcel Ordinaire had begun studying law in Paris, before quickly joining Gustave Courbet's studio; the two men met at the home of Marcel's father, Doctor Ordinaire in Maisières. This friendly closeness was illustrated in particular by Courbet's painting, La Sieste pendant la saison des foins (Naptime during the haying season), painted in the summer of 1867, in which he used Marcel and his brother Olivier as models (the work is kept in the Musée du Petit Palais in Paris). In 1868, Ordinaire took part in his first Salon, as a "pupil of Courbet". He was awarded a medal in 1879 with the Ruisseau du Puits Noir, acquired by the State and deposited in the Montbéliard Museum. His favourite subjects were naturally the regional landscapes of the banks of the Loue, the Bremen, the Black Well... The subject of this work, the Source du Lison, is all the more noteworthy as it was at the origin of the first environmental protection law, initiated by the Doubs deputy Charles Beauquier, at the turn of the 20th century, following a project for the industrial exploitation of the site which the inhabitants of the neighbouring village of Nans-sous-Sainte-Anne had firmly opposed. A year after Marcel Ordinaire's death, in 1897, a tribute exhibition was organised in Besançon, on the initiative of his artist friends: François-Louis Français, Antonin Fanart, Léon Boudot, Edouard Baille... A work entitled La Source du Lison and dated 1880 appears in the catalogue. Although the complete history of our work is not known, it was acquired by an ancestor of the current owners about a century ago, who owned a property on the banks of the Lison. A&J.G.
