71. Saône-et-Loire. Varennes-le-Grand. [Fr. Benoit, parish priest and beekeeper]. Rectory Apiary. (Photo by Bontron. Written by Fr. Benoit, Varennes-le-Grand, September 21, 1936. “I can still provide you with some very good and lovely 1936 honey from my harvest—I’ve been fortunate this year—though half of it is already gone. You know as well as I do that this year has been poor in terms of both yield and quality. Mine—the first batch is very clear and very good; the second is of poorer quality but very dense and sweet—is offered to you at 800 francs per 100 K, picked up at the apiary. I’ll deliver the first batch, etc. That is, 80 K at the price of 100 K, gross weight. A beekeeper (2,600 hives) has [illegible] my entire harvest, which he believes to be 1,500 K. I have too many customers to deliver everything this way. I hope these prices do not put you off, but I doubt that the price of honey, which has risen, will drop tomorrow. […]”
