Large Louis XVI-era portico clock, made of turquoise and whi - Lot 110
Large Louis XVI-era portico clock, made of turquoise and white marble. The circular enamel dial, featuring numerals for the hours and days of the month, is crowned by a statuette of the god Mars. It is supported by two obelisks adorned with trophies, with cascading chains held by lion’s paws and topped with balls. It rests on an entablature highlighted by a frieze and set on six small spindle-shaped feet, with a base of turquoise blue marble accented by a beaded frieze (possibly added later?). Balance wheel with a radiating sun motif—chimes the hours and minutes in 5-minute intervals, with an alarm hand that strikes the hours, half-hours, and quarter-hours. Movement in need of servicing. Movement likely by Nicolas Thomas, who became a master clockmaker in 1778 and was later appointed clockmaker to the King. 60 x 44.5 x 19.5 cm Provenance: - Mes Audap, Solanet, Godeau, Veilliet auction, Drouot, June 25, 1993, lot 139. - Private collection, Besançon, ever since Expert: François Lachaud
