Denis VURPILLOT (Born in Valentigney, 1938) - Lot 260
Denis VURPILLOT (Born in Valentigney, 1938) "Vacances" (Variation II), 1978 Acrylic on panoprey signed and dated lower right, titled on back 38 x 36 cm Provenance: artist's studio Exhibitions : - Galerie Contemporaine, 1980: part of the exhibition was on the theme "Vacances" evoking boats and freedom A student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Besançon, Denis Vurpillot's teachers included Georges Oudot, Jean Ricardon and Jean Gilles. He taught visual arts for almost 35 years, all the while devoting himself to his art, with a first solo exhibition in Besançon in 1970, and some thirty exhibitions to his credit to date, both in the region and across France. Two retrospectives have been held, in 2000 and 2025. Denis Vurpillot's pictorial research leads him to exploit a variety of supports (canvas, cardboard, paper, wood...) and to use equally varied materials (acrylic, gouache, pastel, ink...), also exploring tapestry (made by the Aubusson weavers) and sculpture. Gestural graphics, tachism, calligraphy, writing, light, color, sometimes abstract, sometimes closer to poetic realism, his work is diverse, but carried out with one and the same purpose: to create a poetic and spiritual work. "Vurpillot's painting is a bit like trying to put reality into abstraction [...] Beyond these structural considerations, this painting emanates a beneficial, soothing, serene light, which is undoubtedly the radiance of Denis Vurpillot's faith." (L'Alsacien, June 29 1982, on the occasion of the artist's exhibition at Galerie Aktuaryus in Strasbourg). The ensemble we are offering at this auction provides an overview of Denis Vurpillot's work, from the 1970s to the 2000s. These works were kept at the studio for the foundation project, which unfortunately did not come to fruition due to the death of its founder.
