Antonin FANART (Besançon, 1831-1903) - Lot 119
Antonin FANART (Besançon, 1831-1903) The banks of the Doubs at Baume-les-Dames Oil on canvas signed lower right 49 x 43 cm on view (re-finished) Born in Besançon in 1831, Antonin Fanart was one of the leading figures of the Comtoise school in the 19th century, and distinguished himself in landscape painting from the Alps to Franche-Comté. He trained in Geneva, Switzerland, with the mountain painter François Diday. He returned to Besançon in the 1860s. He exhibited several times at the Salon in Paris and Besançon. Museums in Besançon, Ornans and Dole hold works by the artist. The work we are offering for sale should be compared with Fanart's large oil "Les bords du Doubs à Baume" of 1865 (110 x 200 cm), exhibited at the Salon the same year, and with a sketch of similar composition, smaller in size than our work (both reproduced in: Annie Agache, Antonin Fanart, Paysagiste franc-comtois du XIXe siècle, Cêtre, 1994, p. 79 and 77. This could be the Saut de Gamache, downstream from Baume-les-Dames in the Doubs valley.
