[BAZIN (Gilles Auguste)]. Abregé de l'Histoire des Insectes, - Lot 227
[BAZIN (Gilles Auguste)]. Abregé de l'Histoire des Insectes, pour servir de suite à l'Histoire Naturelle des Abeilles. Paris, Frères Guerin, 1747. 4 vol. in-12 of xx, 328 pp; ij, 298, [4] pp; [4], 424 pp; [3], 1 bl. 446 pp. 53 folding engraved plates. Marbled fawn calf, 5-rib spine with fleurons, red morocco t. and tom. pages, gilt fillet on the edges, red speckled edges (period binding). The author, an eminent physician and naturalist based in Strasbourg where he died in 1754, was librarian to Cardinal Armand-Gaston de ROHAN at his palace in Strasbourg, and a correspondent of REAUMUR since 1737; he took part in discussions on the pre-existence of germs. The contents of the book are taken from REAUMUR's Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des Insectes. Ex-libris ms. "f. m. Landeau aîné", stamped M. FAVEYRIAL. Brunet, VI, 5959; Quérard, I, 232. Small tear, not missing, on pl. 1 of vol. I; small wetness on upper inner corner, but no damage to text or engravings in a few quires of vol. II; a few defects to bindings. A good copy, however, complete with its 53 folding plates, in a contemporary binding.
