SENEQUE. L. Annæi Senecæ Philosophi Opera, quæ exstant omni - Lot 207
SENEQUE. L. Annæi Senecæ Philosophi Opera, quæ exstant omnia : A Justo Lipsio emendata et Scholiis illustrata. Editio secunda atque ab ultima Lipsii manu. Anvers, ex officina Plantiniana, apud viduam et filios J. Moreti, 1615. In-folio of [6] ff, xxxvj, 794, 53, [1] pp, [2] ff. Text ruled. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Juste LIPSE, engraved title, 3 engraved portraits of SENEQUE, 2 full-page after RUBENS, printer's mark on verso of colophon. Fawn basane, spine with 6 ornate nerves, t.p. in fawn morocco, triple gilt fillet framing the boards with gilt coat of arms in the center, gilt roulette on the necks and chases, gilt edges (contemporary binding). Concerning the engraved title, in the 1st edition, made in 1605, the head of the bust of SENEQUE was in profile, RUBENS corrected it for the 1615 edition and made it three-quarter to give it more resemblance to the Antique. "The rest of this print is not by this painter: On this occasion, it should be noted that when the second Edition of the Works of Senecus, illustrated by Juste Lipse, was published in 1615, Rubens took it upon himself to provide Portraits of the Roman Philosopher, more resembling those used in the 1605 Edition [...] The head of the Philosopher, found on pag. X[X]IIII, is not his design, it is a copy of the one that Fluvius Ursinus had engraved for his Illustrium Virorum Imagines." (F. Basan, Catalogue des estampes gravées d'après P. P. Rubens, Paris, Lormel, Sailant, Durand & Dessaint, 1767, n°55, p. 188.) The coat of arms of Jean-Jacques CHARRON, vicomte then marquis de Menars and baron de Conflans-Sainte-Honorine, (1643-1718) président à Mortier du Parlement de Paris, brother-in-law of COLBERT. A great bibliophile, around 1679 he acquired the de THOU collection, which he sold to Cardinal de ROHAN in 1706. The rest of his very rich library was sold in The Hague after his death. Graesse, Trésor de livres rares et précieux, VI, 1st part, 348. Arms: Guigard, II, 125-126. Some staining and browning to binding. A fine copy.
