OVIDE. Pub. Ovidij Nasonis preclarum opus de novo impressum; - Lot 135
OVIDE. Pub. Ovidij Nasonis preclarum opus de novo impressum; et a mendis castigatu[m], in quo continentur hij libri partiales: videlicet, Liber heroidum epistolarum, Liber Sapphus, Libellus in Ibin. cum expositione familiari Antonii Volsci, Ubertini Clerici Cresentinatis, Domitii Calderini, et Iodoci Badii singularium interpretum. Lyon, Stephan Gueynard [printed by Nicolas Wolff], 1511. In-4° of [6], 152 ff (Sig: A6, a-t8). Woodcut title in red and black, ornate lettering, text surrounded by glosses. Full tan calf, cold-engraved fillets, large framing roulettes, three-ribbed spine (contemporary binding). Rare Lyon post-incunabulum of OVIDE's Eroids. The title page shows OVIDUS between his two commentators, Antonius VOLSCIUS and Ubertino CLERICO. The Héroïdes are fictitious love letters in elegiac distich that take up mythical elements, written, for the most part, by mythological or quasi-legendary heroines, lamenting the absence or indifference of the beloved. The last six consist of three letters from heroes, answered by three letters from their respective lovers. Ex-libris ms., notes and feather essays on the flyleaf and endpapers, probably drawn at the time. Baudrier, XI, 227; Adams is missing. Small hole in title, ink stains and soiling, some quires browned. Upper board lacerated, traces of laces.
