LYCOPHRON. Lycophronis Chalcidensis Alexandra. Poëma obscuru - Lot 129
LYCOPHRON. Lycophronis Chalcidensis Alexandra. Poëma obscurum. Lugduni Batavorum [Leiden], Ludovici Elzevirii, 1599. In-8° of 16, 348, [3] pp. Bilingual Greek-Latin text. Tan calf, 5-ribbed spine, tan morocco t.p., "1601" gilt on spine, gilt roulette on edges, red speckled edges (contemporary binding). LYCOPHRON was a Greek poet of the 3rd century BC, whose poem Alexandra is one of his few surviving works. It recounts the prophetic stories of CASSANDRA in Greek mythology, and the fate of the city of Troy and its heroes. This 1599 Elzevier edition was edited with commentaries by Joannes MEURSIUS and his teacher Joseph SCALIGER. Ex-libris ms. with autograph note from "J. Brereton, A very scarce Book By Elzevir 1599. The Father (I suppose) of B. & A. Elzevir." John BRERETON (b. c. 1571/1572 - d. c. 1632), English gentleman adventurer, clergyman and chronicler, took part in Bartholomew GOSNOLD's 1602 voyage to the New World. He recounted the first European exploration of Cape Cod and its environs. His account, A Briefe and true Relation of the Discoverie of the North part of Virginia, published in 1602, helped promote English colonization possibilities in what was then known as the "northern part of Virginia" and would later become New England. GOSNOLD and his compatriots were the first Englishmen to land on this part of the North American coast. Adams, L-2112; Willems 39. Upper hinge cracked, but a solid copy. Engraved bookplate torn from front cover, small loss in upper margin of white endpaper. A good copy with a prestigious provenance.
