ÆMYLIUS (Paulus Veronensis). De rebus gestis Francorum. Pari - Lot 106
ÆMYLIUS (Paulus Veronensis). De rebus gestis Francorum. Paris, Vascosan, 1576. In-f° of [4], 244, [22] ff. Large initials. [Bound at the end:] LE FERRON (Arnoul). Arnoldi Ferroni Burdigalen, Regii consiliarii, De rebus gestis gallorum libri IX. Paris, Michel de Vascosan, 1554. 183, [7] ff. Marbled fawn calf, spine with 6 ornate nerves, t.p. in fawn morocco, double gilt fillet on covers, speckled edges. (Contemporary binding). The Italian humanist Paulo EMILIO (Paulus Æmilius Veronensis), orator and historiographer, was commissioned by Étienne PONCHER, Bishop of Paris, to write a Latin History of France in the style of the time, abandoning that of medieval chronicles. Æmilius died before Book X, and LE FERRON continued his work until Henry II. Adams, F-321. Ex-libris ms. "Quignon", who seems to be the author of the numerous marginalia of the period; bookplate engraved with the cipher; blue stamp of Léon MARES (1906-1916) bearing the words "Bibliothèque de Montrottier, Académie florimontane". Staining to the first and last quarters of the copy, head cover missing, wear to corners.
