OVIDE. Epistolæ heroides Ovidii cum commentariis Antonii Vol - Lot 103
OVIDE. Epistolæ heroides Ovidii cum commentariis Antonii Volsci et Ubertini Clerici Crescentinatis. Venice, Bonetus Locatellus, for Octavianus Scotus, November 14, 1492. In-folio of 96 unencrypted ff [incorrect ink cipher]. (Sign: a-q6). Text framed by gloss, large initials and printer's mark on colophon highlighted in red. 15th c. pastiche binding in havana boxwood, 5-rib mute spine, boards decorated in cold with a large central motif of foliate scrolls and flowers, framed by a large scroll with two sphinxes facing each other, all between light and heavy fillets, edges gilt (G. Huser). Rare edition of Les Héroïdes, which also includes Sappho and Ibis, with annotations by Domitius CALDERINUS. These are fictitious love letters in elegiac distich that take up mythical elements, written, for the most part, by mythological or quasi-legendary heroines, lamenting the absence or indifference of the beloved. The last six consist of three letters from heroes, answered by three letters from their respective lovers. "Here, transposed into the gallant climate of first-century Roman society, we find the reflection of the erotic experiences of the young Ovid" (ms. note on endpaper). Beautiful, complete incunabulum, perfectly established by Georges HUSER (1879-1961), bookbinder trained in the workshops of DAVID, NOULHAC then LEMARDELEY whom he succeeded in 1903; he was active until 1955. Goff, O-160 [dated October 19, 1492]. Old Marginalia sometimes trimmed short, last leaf doublet, very small worm work reaching a few letters on ff. p4-q6, spine unstained.
