BAUHIN, Jean. De Aquis medicatis nova methodus. Montisbeligardi [Montbéliard], Jacob Foillet, 1607. 4 parts in 1 vol. small in-4° of [22] pp, 1 bl. f., 291, [6] pp, 1 bl. f., 222 pp, 1 bl. f., [20] pp. frontispiece portrait of the author and numerous woodcuts in the text. Contemporary soft ivory vellum, title in ink on spine. Rare second edition of this interesting work on European mineral fountains, in particular the recently discovered sulfur springs at Bad Boll in Württemberg, their excellent effects and the varieties of apples and pears grown there, profusely illustrated with large woodcuts in the text. The author also describes minerals and fossils in detail. The woodcuts show the first images of fossilized ammonites found when the spring was discovered. The book also contains a number of woodcuts of insects. Enriched copy with 6 extremely rare original woodcuts of the Boll baths, attributed to Philipp GRETTER, one monogrammed "I T C S", all folding and bound on fine mounts. Each measures approx. 27 x 37 cm. Together, these 6 engravings form a magnificent view of the Boll baths, measuring approx. 114 x 54 cm; they were published in the edition of the original 1598 edition translated into German, in 1602, in Stuttgart, by Fürster, under the title : Ein New Badbuch, und Historische Beschreibung, Von der wunderbaren Krafft und würckung, des Wunder Brunnen und Heilsamen Bads zu Boll, nicht weit vom Sawrbrunnen zu Göppingen, im Hertzogthumb Würtemberg. Philippe GRETTER, who died in 1612, was a court painter in Stuttgart and took part in the execution of hunting and landscape paintings. (Bénézit, V, 198). His monumental engraving is the oldest known depiction of the Boll baths and one of the earliest printed special maps (Spezialkarte) of Baden-Württemberg. Old annotations on the back cover. The "Paralipomena" with its woodcuts of mushrooms, placed after book III, is complete. The 4 books follow each other without a title page. Small lace holes, small hole in the vellum on the lower cover, wetness at the lower outer corner over half the copy, without affecting the fold-outs, a few small wormholes without gravity, some foxing. The plates have been skilfully restored; they show some foxing and a few small holes that are not serious, as well as a few rare and very small tears at the folds. Their condition is very good.
