[Dolois manuscript]. PATOUILLET (Nicolas). Autograph manuscr - Lot 58
[Dolois manuscript]. PATOUILLET (Nicolas). Autograph manuscript, Instauratio literarum ad Lucalia anno 1657 - Theologiæ studium : Oceanus Divinitatis enavigandus (quire of 26 pp. ½ small in-4) accompanied by 2 other autograph pieces, the Eloge de la barbe (De Barba Elogium) and an ode, (6 pp. small in-4). Dôle, 1657-1659. Collection of Latin odes written in Dôle, the first of which reveals the quality of the author: a professor of theology at the Collège de l'Arc in Dôle. Instauratio literarum ad Lucalia anno 1657 - Theologiæ studium : Oceanus Divinitatis enavigandus. I.e.: Inaugural course of letters for the St-Luc of 1657 - Study of theology - crossing the Ocean of Divinity. The author compares the course on God and Divinity he is to develop over the next four years to a trans-oceanic navigation, (quadrienni remigio); note the final notice, quo primum anno Theologiæ datum esset operam Dolæ 18 8bris 1657: the year in which theology was first taught in Dôle. We note an ode to LEOPOLD 1st of Austria for his election (July 18, 1658). At the time, Dôle was not attached to the French crown. The college at Dôle was entrusted to the Jesuits, who taught grammar, rhetoric and the humanities. But the introduction of theology proved problematic, for reasons that remain obscure. The author is therefore one of the first theology teachers. We have the beginning of his course on the back of the ode Ad Georgium Bochvinum: Vana finxerunt de deo philosophi.
