RICHARD (M.). History of the dioceses of Besançon and Saint-Claude. Besançon, Librairie Ecclésiastique de Cornu, 1847 (t. I) and 1851 (II and III). 3 volumes in 2 vols. Half red basane, long spine decorated with gilt roulette and quintuple fillets (period binding). The basane of the second volume is marbled. Volume III is entitled: Liste chronologique des Archevêques de Besançon, des Evêques suffragants et coadjuteurs ; Biographie des ecclésiastiques distingués et tableau des paroisses [...]. Vol. 1 is annotated in the margins and, above all, profusely enriched with numerous autograph notes written by Charles DUVERNOY on glued sheets regrading the passages concerned. Charles DUVERNOY (Montbéliard, 1774-Besançon, 1850), former librarian of Montbéliard, collaborated actively with Charles WEISS, and took part in all the critical publishing ventures of the period. He was a corresponding associate member of the Académie des Sciences, Belles-lettres et Arts de Besançon. His address appears on the back of one of the many leaves covered in his handwriting (p. 399).
