GRANDMOUGIN (Charles). Ode to Colonel Denfert-Rochereau, def - Lot 368
GRANDMOUGIN (Charles). Ode to Colonel Denfert-Rochereau, defender of Belfort in 1870-1871. Dite à Montbéliard le 21 septembre 1879 pour l'inauguration de la statue exécutée par M. Becquet, Paris: Librairie Sandoz et Fischbacher, G. Fischbacher éditeur, 1879. In-12, 22 pp. Paperback, very good condition (paper missing at bottom of back cover).
Rare booklet published on the occasion of this inauguration. Charles Grandmougin (Vesoul, 1850 - Paris, 1930) enlisted voluntarily in 1870. He dedicated this ode to F. J. Viette, Member of Parliament for Doubs. Just Becquet is one of the great artists associated with Besançon. The statue of Denfert-Rochereau, which cost 18,000 francs, no longer exists. It was built following a national subscription and cast in bronze by Jules Graux et Cie in Paris, with the pedestal made by the Bloch brothers, marble masons in Montbéliard. Inscription (from the author?) on the title page: "A Mr Mislin sympathiquement".
