[Jura]. JOBEZ (Alphonse) (1813-1893), director of the Syam forges and deputy for the Jura. Autograph letter signed, London, May 29, 1839. To his mother, "Madame Jobez, aux forges de Siam". 4 pp. two-sheet in-8°. Alphonse JOBEZ evokes Pauline GARCIA in Othello "who promises by her debut an actress of the greatest talent: she has a high voice and at the same time a very low voice, which is quite rare", his meeting with Louis Napoléon, the future NAPOLEON III, and the latter's premonitory political ideas, a year before the failed coup d'état in Boulogne: "a very ordinary man. I was able to convince myself of this in the evening I spent with him; he's no fool, for he's not lacking in a certain wit, he even read me a few pages from a work he's about to publish entitled idées Napoléoniennes, which weren't badly written. but what ideas are his, what madness has entered his head, [......] his secretary Monsieur de Persigny told me seriously and without laughing that if France lacked unity in its convictions, if in a word it was divided by parties, it was due to only one thing, and that was that there was no popular family on the throne of France, and that if a Bonaparte were on the throne, all this disunity would cease, and we would march in unison towards prosperity." JOBEZ held himself up all evening "in completely republican principles, which seemed to vex Monsieur de Persigny a little". He then mentions the famous English actor MAEREADY in a BYRON tragedy: "perfect. I've never seen a greater tragedian, no emphasis in his acting, no shouting". He then went with Mr. MAIRE to see the London Docks, where he describes their practical operation, then explains at length the system of "cheeks" (bank checks), "a little book with a counterfoil like passports". JOBEZ was a general councillor in 1838, and one of the leaders of the opposition to the July Monarchy in the Jura. He was deputy for Jura from 1848 to 1849, sitting as a moderate republican. Small tears at folds.
