[Manuscript - ROME]. MICHEL, Jean-Baptiste (baron de Trétaig - Lot 209
[Manuscript - ROME]. MICHEL, Jean-Baptiste (baron de Trétaigne). [Autographed working notes on health and diseases in Rome, ca. 1813-1845]. 81 f. (i.e. 105 p. ms), plus 1 L. A. S., 3 plans, 3 engravings. Important set (105 p.) of autograph working notes on Rome and especially on fevers and diseases born of insalubrity. J. B. Michel deals with Rome through its origin, its population, its climate, its hygiene and its relative salubrity, the marshy evacuations and their influences, the enclosures, the fountains, the thermal baths, the Pontine Marshes, etc. Many of these notes concern the diseases and fevers born of the insalubrity of certain areas. His first motivation was the treatment of diseases suffered by French soldiers in Rome. His second motivation, in the years 1845, was the re-publication of his work "Recherches médico-topographiques sur Rome et l'Agro romano" (published in 1813), updated with the scientific progress made since. The research and observations of J. B. Michel are certainly not new, but they have the originality of emanating from a foreign observer who is a priori impartial. Jean-Baptiste Michel de Trétaigne (1780-1869) was a military doctor. He was the last mayor of the town of Montmartre. He was the principal physician of the Empire's armies and deputy inspector of the Army's Health Council. He was stationed at the military hospital in Rome from 1808 to 1814 and published in 1813 his Recherches médico-topographiques sur Rome et l'Agro romano, a work that has become rare. We enclose: - A L. A. S. from Eugène Grellois (1811-1887): addressed on April 9, 1864 to Michel, he asks the latter if he can provide him with a copy of his 1813 work, "which has become rare"; - 3 plans extracted from the work of J. B. Michel and 3 engravings. - 4 f. of anonymous notes on J. B. Michel.
