[SELMERSHEIM, Pierre]. The Society of the Diner of Fifty. 18 - Lot 202
[SELMERSHEIM, Pierre]. The Society of the Diner of Fifty. 1862-1905. [Paris], printed by Frazier-Soye, November 25, 1905. Large in-4° of 17 pp, 26 plates, [2] pp, 4 plates, [1] p. The whole mounted on tabs. Red half-chagrin with corners, spine with 5 false rings, gilt title, double gilt fillet on the boards, gilt head (Binding of the period). The copy of Colonel Sadi Carnot. A letter from Jules Blanchard at the bottom of the photo of one of his sculptures, "to Mr. Sadi Carnot, souvenir 11 March 1912, J. Blanchard", suggests that the copy was offered to him at the time of his reception in the Society, in 1912. Gathered in 1862 under the name of Société du dîner de six francs, renamed in 1870 Société du Diner des cinquante, the members were mostly from the world of the arts; they met at Champeaux's, place de la Bourse, then at Brébant's, then at the Restaurant Millon and finally at the Café de la Paix and the Pavillon Ledoyen. The 30 plates are phototyped reproductions of the annual convocations signed by Gaucherel (22), Galland, Gaillard, Lavastre, Hügelin, Toussaint, Titeux and Lameire. With a chronological list of members from the founding in 1862 to February 1905. The copy is enriched ● with a group photograph, albumen print laminated (12.2 x 17.1 cm), circa 1890, captioned in pencil; among the 25 personalities, we recognize Camille Flammarion, Daniel Lesueur (Jeanne Loiseau), Rochegrosse and Jules Harmand. ● 2 invitations to the Diner des cinquante: March 1, 1920 (500th dinner), illustrated with a reproduction by Renouard, and March 14, 1938, with the list of members, illustrated with an engraving by Beurdeley. ● 9 LAS and 5 CA (3 of which signed) of thanks addressed to Colonel Carnot for sending his book on the Volontaires de la Côte-d'Or, from March 16 to 21, 1912, a few days after his admission to the Society. We note the signatures of H. Saladin, L. Gonse, who regrets "that an indisposition prevented him from hosting the last dinner," J. Tillet, G. Dreyfus, G. Darcy, J. Blanchard, P. Selmersheim, A. Ballu, A. Cordier, L. Bonnier, who would have liked to "sketch [the same] for [his] Flanders and the gunners of the siege of Lille. One cannot revive too much these times of enthusiasm and civic vigor", C. Enlart, who sends him brochures about Burgundy, and shares with him archives concerning the ancestors of the colonel, and finally Paul Renouard, illustrated with a sepia engraving.
