DESCHAMPS, L. Notes on the expedition of General Bonaparte t - Lot 162
DESCHAMPS, L. Notes on the expedition of General Bonaparte to Italy in 1796-1797. Especially on the fall of Venice. [Paris, 1894]. Typescript in-4° of 53 ff. recto only. Paperback, black percaline, label on the back "Venise 1796-1797. Succ. Thiary [sic]". "Unique copy offered to Mr. Carnot, President of the French Republic, on Thursday, March 22, 1894. To the copy, is pinned an autograph letter signed by the author addressed to the President, dated Paris, March 19, 1894. DESCHAMPS specifies the object of his Notes: to prove that Bonaparte delivered Venice to the Austrians at the time of the treaty of Campo Formio in order to conceal the enormous sums embezzled by him, Haller and Saliceti with the complicity of Barras; "then the accusation formulated by this last one against the Director Carnot to be the author of the project of delivering Venice to Austria falls of itself. He would thus explain the abandonment of Carnot by Bonaparte on 18 fructidor, "Carnot knew too much about what had happened in Italy". Bonaparte would have had 28 million of the 80 million embezzled. The author has indicated precisely his sources, and, in order not to be suspected of political motivation, he has linked his work to the affair of the Jean Thierry estate, a claim concerning the 800,000 gold florins that Bonaparte had seized in Venice. The copy is unique, and, says the author, "will never be reproduced with the references to the sources: and the notes will be destroyed as soon as the work is in your hands", the author fearing that one makes disappear the parts of the files.
