[BURGUNDY - CLUNI, ART IN BURGUNDY]. Reunion of 5 volumes: - Lot 209
[BURGUNDY - CLUNI, ART IN BURGUNDY]. Reunion of 5 volumes: 1) BRUEL, François-Louis. Cluni. Historical and Archaeological Album. Preceded by a summarized study and a notice of the plates, Macon: Protat, 1910. In-4 of 56 p. Filled illustrated cover (title and date in gothic characters, with historiated initial), mute spine. 34 hors-texte plates (including a view of the abbey on a folding plate). Beautiful and rich hors-texte illustration, for this album-tribute to the abbey of Cluny, on the occasion of the millennium celebrations of 1910. "It is a tour de force of which any other, less prepared, would have been incapable. A work of popularization, no doubt, the study of Mr. Fr.L. Bruel's study has no less the merit of a scrupulous accuracy written with an easy elegance [...] Choice characters, luxury paper, artistic printing of the plates, appropriate titles and culs-de-lampe, nothing was spared to dress up the new work sumptuously, and, in a few weeks, taking care that it was printed and that it would be available in the next few years, it was possible to produce a book that would be a great success. In a few weeks, Mr. Georges Protat, who wanted to print and publish it at his own expense, offered us this beautiful book, of a sober richness, of an exquisite taste, of a perfect execution on all points. (cf Henri. Courteault. in Revue des études historiques, n°76, 1910, p. 659-660). 2) V21088, Fernand. The French primitives. La peinture clunisienne en Bourgogne à l'époque romane, son histoire et sa technique, Paris : Picard, 1931. Fort in-4 of [16], 237 p., 113 hors-texte plates. Paperback, printed cover. A very good copy complete with its 113 hors-texte plates. First edition. Edition of 1000 numbered copies on laid paper. Beautiful reference work on Romanesque painting in Burgundy: illuminations, wall decorations, relations of the Cluny order with painting. Work based mainly on the wall paintings of Berzé-la-Ville, Cluny and Tournus, compared to the Cluniac manuscripts of the time. 3) MUSÉE DE DIJON. Salle des gardes and salles des chefs-d'œuvre. Catalogue sommaire à l'usage du visiteur, Dijon: Palais des États de Bourgogne, 1945. 31 p. 4) MUSÉE DE DIJON. La charteuse de Champmol foyer d'art au temps des ducs de Valois, 1960. 28 p. and 35 plates. 5) Bourgogne romane, Zodiaque, 1974. 342 p., abundantly illustrated.
