[JOLY, Claude]. Histoire de la prison et de la liberté de mo - Lot 191
[JOLY, Claude]. Histoire de la prison et de la liberté de monsieur le Prince, Paris : Augustin Courbé, 1651. In-4 of [6], 227 pp. Blonde calf, double fillets and irons on the boards, spine ribbed and decorated. A very good copy in a sound contemporary binding (some wear and rubbing). A crucial moment of the Fronde is here restored, in a "curious edition" and "quite well written" (Lelong). An account of the negotiations and twists and turns that took place from Mazarin's arrest of the Prince of Condé in January 1650 until their release in February 1651. According to Moreau: "What, after all, recommends the History of the prison and freedom of Mr. Prince is the accuracy of the facts and the impartiality of judgments. It is however the work of a rebel, Claude Joly. I have always been surprised that it was not reprinted after the Memoirs of this writer. Moreau, II, n°1639; Barbier, II, 707; Cioranescu, 36533; Lelong, Bibliothèque historique, 23265.
