BAYLE, Pierre. Nouvelles Lettres de l'Auteur de la Critique - Lot 180
BAYLE, Pierre. Nouvelles Lettres de l'Auteur de la Critique Générale de l'Histoire du Calvinisme de Mr. Maimbourg, Ville-Franche [i. e. Amsterdam] : Chez Pierre le Blanc [i. e. A. Wolfgang], 1685. In-12 of [24], 1-409, [1]; [2], 413-432, 411, 412, [2, instructions to binder], [1], 410, 433-698, 717-718, 699-716, 719-792, [28]. Complete despite pagination errors. Full contemporary vellum, handwritten annotations on endpapers. A very good copy, well bound at the time. The first work in which Bayle outlines his fundamental principles of freedom of conscience and religious tolerance, "Bayle departs here from Maimbourg, who serves mainly as a pretext for the title, perhaps because of the success that the Critique générale had obtained. The New Letters are a good book of controversy, in which the author attacks Arnauld, Pellisson, the persecutors, the dragonnades, etc. He puts forward for the first time a number of arguments that are not in line with his philosophy. He puts forward for the first time new ideas on tolerance and wandering conscience: error is only a fault if it is conscious, committed in ignorance it is on the contrary all innocence; heretics, if they are, and since they are of good faith, are therefore not guilty before God. (cf. A. Sauvy. Books Seized in Paris between 1678 and 1701, 1972, p. 179). Although it is indicated First part on each of these volumes, the work is complete, Bayle never having followed up on this part. Barbier, III-375; Sauvy, 315.
