ESTIENNE, Henri. Thesaurus Græcæ linguæ. [Geneva], Henri Est - Lot 172
ESTIENNE, Henri. Thesaurus Græcæ linguæ. [Geneva], Henri Estienne, 1572. 4 volumes and appendix-index bound in 4 strong vol. in-folio of 20, XX pp. 1 f. of false title, XXIV columns, 1946 col. ; (1) f., XII, 1700 col. 1 bl. f. ; 1793 col. 1 bl. f. ; [1] f., 834 col. ; 1746 col. 1 p. bl., 212 col. Printer's mark on title. Full tan calf, spine with six raised bands, gilt title, caissons decorated with a small gilt iron, large gilt plate on the boards in a gilt fillet, edges spotted with red (Binding of the period). First edition of this monument, the first great lexicon of ancient Greek, of capital importance in the history of publishing, a work of which De Thou declared a "treasure superior in wealth to the treasure of many princes". The most important work of the humanist Henri II Estienne (known as the Great) which caused his ruin, the enterprise proving far too expensive. The words are not classified alphabetically, but according to their roots and their derivatives. See the long note devoted by Renouard (p. 135, n°3). Manuscript ex-dono to each volume, with, in the title of volume I, a commentary on inquisitorial approval with reference to Gaspar Quiroga, archbishop of Toledo and primate of Spain; 2 bookplate labels including that of the library of the Minoris Seminar. Æduens, for the use of teachers. Volume I: few rings, a few freckles, small paper loss on the title, not serious; volume II: wetness at the head of the whole copy causing a few holes and tears on the last 2 leaves (with small losses on 7 words) and on the last blank leaf; volumes III and IV: wetness; Appendix: wetness in the inner margin at the tail without affecting the text. The appendix volume was restored in the 19th century. The other three bindings are very damaged, with numerous calf tears on the spine, worn edges and corners, open hinges, volume I also showing a lack of skin on the boards. The spines are darkened. A precious copy in its original binding, unfortunately in its present state.
