Georges LAETHIER (Besançon, 1875-1955) Naiad Bronze sculpture with green-brown patina, signed on the back and founder's stamp (unidentified) on the base. H. 30.8 cm Born in Besançon, Georges Laëthier is the brother of painter Edmond Laëthier. A student at the Besançon School of Fine Arts, he won a prize for drawing, but it was in sculpture that he distinguished himself. He was a pupil of regional sculptor Just Becquet. He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes français in Paris in 1901, and in 1903 won a gold medal for his Vieillard à la Source, a marble sculpture now in the Musée des Beaux-arts in Besançon. The Poilu on the war memorial at Les Glacis in Besançon is by Georges Laëthier.
