The copy of Councillor de MESMAY (1751-1826), Lord of Quince - Lot 304
The copy of Councillor de MESMAY (1751-1826), Lord of Quincey.
CHIFFLET (Jean Jacques).Vesontio civitas imperialis libera, Sequanorum metropolis, plurimis, plurimis, nec vulgaribus sacrae, prophanaeque historiae monumentis, illustrata, in duas partes distincta. Lyon, Claude Cayne, 1618. 2 parts in 1 vol. in-4°. Engraved title by LOISY, engraved coat-of-arms, 3 folding plates h.-t. Soft ivory vellum, apparent binding, title in ink on spine (contemporary binding).
A handwritten note states: "bought 7 [livres] in 1815, in Besançon, at the sale of the books of Mr. le Conseiller De Mesmay". The purchaser enriched the copy, around 1830, with several engravings, of which he gives a detailed list on a sheet glued at the head: A view of the triumphal arch of the Besançon bridge, destroyed in 1770; Project for navigation of the Doubs in 1822; A view of the Chamars baths; Cathedral pulpit "cette chaire à prêcher démolie par ordre de Mgr le Crdinal de Rohan , au vif regtret des habitans de la ville en 1829" ; chapitaux and columns found in the demolition of churches; Aurelian's triumphal arch; inscriptions found behind the sacristy of the former Saint-Pierre church; coins minted in Besançon and the province; another engraving was probably added later ( Besançon-Nord in 1840). Tears not missing from the attachments of the folding plates, the engraved title is not trimmed short, as is often the case. A good copy.
Also included: CASTAN (A.). Le Capitole de Vesontio et les Capitoles provinciaux du monde romain. [Paris, sans nom, 1869]. In-8° paginated 47-77, plates VIII-X bound in fine. Paperback, with ms. "Mémoires lus à la Sorbonne en 1868. Paris, 1869."
