Monchablon'. 57,5 x 78,5 cm at sight Damaged frame Stamp "Inventory Jan Monchablon" and n°54 on the back on the frame, notary stamp "Me Julien, notary in Isches, Vosges". Originally from Châtillon-sur-Saône in the Vosges, Jan Monchablon grew up partly in Nantes. He became a young teacher in Quimper and then left for Paris where he studied with the artists Jean-Paul Laurens and Alexandre Cabanel. He became interested in landscape painting, particularly that of his native country, traveling there regularly, before leaving Paris with his family and settling there in 1886. He painted works of an almost photographic realism. He exhibited at the Salon from 1881, and won medals at the World Fairs. During his lifetime he had commercial ties with the United States and several of his works are preserved in museums in New York, Cleveland and Milwaukee. Antoine Bourdelle created a monument in honor of the artist, which was erected in his native village in 1909.
