Auguste CLERGE (1891-1963) The village of Flaviac, 1959 Oil on canvas, signed lower left and dated, titled on the back 81 x 100 cm Auguste Clergé (born in Troyes in 1891 and died in Paris in 1963) was a complete artist. Painter and clown, theater actor and decorator, lithographer and illustrator, he was a student in Paris of Fernand Cormon. Wounded during the 1914-1918 war, he then moved to Montparnasse where he founded a company of painters. There he met Kees Van Dongen, Chaïm Soutine, Maurice Utrillo, and befriended Maurice Le Scouëzec... He is known for having painted one of the pillars of the brasserie La Coupole in Montparnasse, along with about thirty artists of the time.
