SUARÈS, André. [Autograph letter signed + copy of the first - Lot 219
SUARÈS, André. [Autograph letter signed + copy of the first edition of the Shield of the Zodiac]. 1 p. Excellent condition (one edge frayed without affecting the text). Detail : [1]. Splendid handwritten letter signed on both sides by the author to Francis de Miomandre, also a contributor to the Occident, dated 23/09/1910 (Plougasnou, Finistère) : "So you like the "shield", my dear miomandre [sic], and you have not disappointed me: I always am when they talk about my works. How they all make the small mouth! How the slightest admiration costs them! Right or wrong, one is always a hundred leagues away from what I wanted to do in the past, and a hundred thousand from what I do. I believe that you have well seen the triple intrigue of the imagination in the "shield" and how the three worlds come out of each other, to enter each other, according to whether the emotion confuses them or distinguishes them. These steps of the spirit are so secret, there enters so little calculation, that one reveals them to the spirit itself. It seems to me that the ellipse is the very form of my thought. After all, the idea itself is only ever a being, a living animal, with all the natural relations that it implies. I am very happy that a VS [?] has given "Lais et Sônes" to the West. Not a word, nowhere, from anyone. They may go to concerts, but they will never like the music. I will come to see you, on my return, and I will offer you the "Voyage du Condottière" which is going to appear. I shake your hand my dear miomandre, be well. Signed: SU." Remarkable testimony of a budding literary friendship but also of the reception of Suarès' work. Miomandre is indeed recognized as one of the "discoverers" of Suarès (but also of Gide, Claudel, Valéry). Suarès begins to forge his reputation of Condottière des Lettres, genius and unknown passer-by. The Shield of the Zodiac was hailed by the greatest writers of the time and yet had no success (only fifteen copies sold in 1910). [2]. SUARÈS, André. Bouclier du zodiaque, Paris, Bibliothèque de l'Occident, 1907. Large In-8 (17 x 25 cm) of 156 p. Paperback, in crystal paper cover. Defects in the tail and head, a small lack to the last plate, broken spine but fresh interior. Rare first edition of the author's most mythical collection. One of 133 copies on Vergé Hollande Van Gelder (n°132) after 17 first copies on the same paper but decorated with a handwritten motto.
