MOINET, Louis. New general astronomical and civil treatise of theoretical and practical clock-making according to the most skilful authors and the recent progress of the art [...]. Containing a new practical and universal method of gearing, according to science modified by application, with exact and large figures of pinions and teeth, easily reducible in small, the ancient and modern escapements, and the current free escapements, cadratures, workmanship, tables, etc...., all without algebra and for the use of workshops; enriched with elements of general physics, or first usual notions of practical geometry, mechanics, chemistry, gnomonics, for meridians, sundials, barometers, thermometers, etc..., Paris : chez l'auteur, 1848. Large in-8 of [2], 432, [16] p., frontispiece, 18 folding plates in fine (numbered I to XVIII) (first volume); [2], 544 p., 33 folding plates in fine (numbered XIX to LI) (second volume). Spine and headbands in good condition, boards very rubbed, corners bumped with important tears; binding nevertheless solid, excellent interior condition (paper slightly browned), good condition of the plates. First edition. Complete with the 51 folding plates placed at the end of the volumes (these plates are sometimes found separately in an atlas volume). Classic work on clock-making. Two other editions followed (1853 and 1875). In addition to the treatise itself, it contains a historical preface, a lexicon of technical terms, tables of average equations of various lengths of the pendulum and of the acceleration of stars. Louis Moinet (1758-1853) worked for a long time with Louis-Abraham Breguet. He is the inventor of the chronograph, also called "counter of thirds".
