[Autograph letter]. MARMIER, Xavier. Autograph letter signed - Lot 50
[Autograph letter]. MARMIER, Xavier. Autograph letter signed, May 23, undated [after 1870], recipient unknown. 10.5 x 13 cm, 2 f. (4 p. ms). Very good condition. Marmier, nostalgic and patriotic, delivers a touching evocation of the "beautiful country of Alsace" after the region was lost in 1870. "Since the distant day when we left Mulhouse and Colmar, that in so many cordial reminiscences, I must return to the beautiful country of Alsace". Alsace, he "crossed it in all its length [...], with a deep feeling of sadness". Why did he have to make this trip to Alsace? The answer is in "the stanzas attached to this letter". Marmier states that before he dies he would like to "see this dear province reunited with France."
